Nakano Sekiou

Japanese: 中野碩翁 - なかのせきおう
Nakano Sekiou

A shogunate official in the late Edo period. Commonly known as Sadanosuke. His given name was Kiyoshige. He was the governor of Harima. After he retired, he shaved his head and took the name Sekio (Sekio). He started out as a small storehouse manager in 1783 (Tenmei 3), and served the 11th shogun, Tokugawa Ienari, as a page, head page, small storehouse manager, and new head clerk. He retired in 1830 (Tenpo 1), but was allowed to continue working in the inner palace with his head shaved. Due to his witty personality, he earned the trust and love of Ienari, and he also served as the foster father of Ienari's favorite concubine, Omiyoshi (he was one of the so-called Three Elders). However, after Ienari's death in 1841 (Tenpo 12), he fell from grace, and in April of the same year he was ordered to be placed under house arrest, forbidden from entering the castle, and died in May.
