...This is why the early typefaces created by Gutenberg were the same as the "black letters" written by scribes at the time. Meanwhile, in Florence, Italy, the center of the Renaissance, a new, bright and easy-to-read typeface was adopted to replace the "black letters" that were a relic of the feudal Middle Ages, and on this basis, Nicolas Jenson (1420-80) perfected the Roman typeface in Venice around 1470. Since then, improvements to Roman typefaces have been made, and from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century, the foundations of modern Roman typefaces were laid by the excellent techniques of the Didot family of France and Caveliere Giambattista Bodoni (1740-1813) of Italy.
