Savoy

Japanese: Savoia
Savoy

...The family originated in the 11th century with Duke Umberto I the White, a feudal lord in Burgundy, France. Later, through conquest and marriage policies, the family acquired a large territory stretching from southeastern France to northwestern Italy (Savoy, the Aosta Valley, and Piedmont), forming the Duchy of Savoy in the 15th century, and in the mid-16th century, Emanuele Filiberto established an absolute monarchy. Thus, although the Duchy of Savoy was strongly influenced by France at its origin, during the 16th century it strengthened the character of an Italian state centered on Piedmont.
