Later, through conquest and marriage policies, the family acquired a large territory stretching from southeastern France to northwestern Italy (Savoy, the Aosta Valley, and Piedmont), forming the Duchy of Savoy in the 15th century, and in the mid-16th century, Emanuele Filiberto established an absolute monarchy.
