Governor of North Africa for the Umayyad dynasty. Nephew of the Egyptian conqueror Amr ibn al-As. Completed the conquest of Tunisia from Libya between 663 and 670. Founded the military city of Kairawan in Tunisia in 670, and used it as a base for the conquest of North Africa thereafter. In 680, led an army on a long march to the Maghreb, reaching the Atlantic Ocean north of Agadir in Morocco. On the way back, he was killed in battle with the Berbers near Biskra. [Hanada Uaki]
