Kyushu-Palau Ridge

An ocean ridge that stretches from southeast Kyushu to Palau. It runs north to south through the center of the Philippine Sea, with a length of about 2,000 kilometers. The eastern side is called the Shikoku Basin, and the western side is called the Philippine Basin. At first glance it looks like a mid-ocean ridge, but no shallow earthquakes have occurred there, and the rocks that make up its base are andesite and granodiorite, with the same composition as island arcs. It is thought that an ancient island arc that ceased activity about 30 million years ago soon sank and became submerged.

九州南東方沖からパラオに連なる海嶺。フィリピン海の中央を南北に走り、長さは約2000キロメートルである。その東側を四国海盆、西側をフィリピン海盆という。一見すると中央海嶺のようにみえるが浅い地震がおこっておらず、基盤を構成する岩石も安山岩や花崗閃緑岩(かこうせんりょくがん)で、島弧(とうこ)と同じ組成である。3000万年くらい前に活動を停止した古島弧が、まもなく沈降し水沈したものと考えられている。
