…The belief in Guandi began in the Tang Dynasty, but he was first worshipped in various places as a war god, and eventually became the chief deity of the Martial Temple, in contrast to Confucius in the Confucian Temple. He was also called Guan Laoye and had the attributes of a god of wealth. He was syncretized with the Buddhist and Taoist beliefs of the people, and in the Song Dynasty he became widely worshipped, with amulet statues hung on gates and kept close at hand.
