Ibe Shinto

Japanese: 忌部神道 - いんべしんとう

Based on the theory of Imbe Masamichi, a Shintoist from the early Muromachi period, Hirota Tansai began to advocate Shinto in the early Edo period. Masamichi is known for writing Jindai Kukke (5 volumes), a relatively early commentary on the Nihon Shoki. This commentary is based on the theory of Song Dynasty learning, and explains that the true heart of man is something that is common to the gods in heaven and the spirits in all things, and compares the jewel of the Three Sacred Treasures to the virtues of moist benevolence, the mirror to pure, clear, honesty, and the sword to wisdom and strength. From this, he explains the pure and clear heart as the ethics of each individual.

室町時代前期の神道家忌部正通の説をもととして，江戸時代の初期広田担斎が唱えだした神道。正通は，『日本書紀』の比較的早い注釈書である『神代口訣』 (5巻) を著わしたことで知られるが，この注釈は，宋学の理論によって解したものであり，天における神，万物における霊と共通するものとして人の真心をあげ，三種の神器の玉を湿潤仁恵，鏡を清明正直，剣を剛利知恵の徳にたとえる。ここから，各人の倫理としての清明心を説く。
