Starweed - Starweed

An annual plant of the Eriocaulaceae family (APG classification: Eriocaulaceae). It has many basal leaves, 3-6 cm long, 1-2 mm wide, and a pointed tip. From August to October, it produces several to a dozen flower stalks, 3-15 cm long, with gray-white, ovoid, 3-4 mm long flower heads. The involucre is smaller than the flower heads and is inconspicuous. Male flowers have three petals and three sepals, which are fused together and form a tube at the bottom. The anthers are white. Female flowers have no petals and two sepals that are separate. It grows in rice paddies and marshes, and is distributed throughout Japan except Hokkaido, as well as in East Asia, South Asia, Australia, and Africa. Its name comes from the fact that the flower heads at the end of the numerous flower stalks resemble stars, and it is also known as Mizutamasou (polka dot grass).

ホシクサ科（APG分類：ホシクサ科）の一年草。葉は多数根生し、長さ3～6センチメートル、幅1～2ミリメートル、先は細くとがる。8～10月、3～15センチメートルの花茎を数～十数本出し、灰白色で卵球形、長さ3～4ミリメートルの頭花をつける。総包は頭花より小さく、目だたない。雄花は花弁、萼片(がくへん)ともに3枚、それぞれ互いに合着し、下部は筒になる。葯(やく)は白色。雌花は花弁はなく、萼片は2枚で離生する。水田や湿地に生え、北海道を除く日本全国、および東アジア、南アジア、オーストラリア、アフリカに分布する。名は、頭花が多数の花茎の先に点々とつくようすを、ちりばめられた星に見立てたもので、別名ミズタマソウ（水玉草）ともいう。
