Petr Chelčický

A minor nobleman and lay monk from southern Bohemia, born around 1390-1460. He established the doctrine of the Bohemian Brethren (Czech Brethren). He aimed to return to primitive Christianity and rejected all secular and religious authority. Although he was influenced by the ideas of Wycliffe and Hus, he forbade rebellion against authority such as the Hussite movement. He preached a society of freedom, equality, and non-violence. He considered city life and commercial activity to be decadent, and only permitted people to engage in agriculture and handicrafts, and idealized poverty. His ideas are well expressed in his major works, "Homilies" and "The Net of Faith."

南ボヘミア出身の小貴族で，平修道士。ボヘミア兄弟団(チェコ兄弟団)の教義の確立者。原始キリスト教への復帰をめざし，聖俗権力をいっさい否定した。ウィクリフ，フスの思想的影響を受けながらも，フス派運動のような権力に対する反抗を禁じた。彼の説くところは自由，平等，非暴力の社会であった。都市生活，商業活動は堕落とみなされ，農耕，手工業への従事のみを許し，貧困を理想とした。主著《説教書》《信仰の網》には，彼の思想がよく表れている。
