A minor nobleman and lay monk from southern Bohemia, born around 1390-1460. He established the doctrine of the Bohemian Brethren (Czech Brethren). He aimed to return to primitive Christianity and rejected all secular and religious authority. Although he was influenced by the ideas of Wycliffe and Hus, he forbade rebellion against authority such as the Hussite movement. He preached a society of freedom, equality, and non-violence. He considered city life and commercial activity to be decadent, and only permitted people to engage in agriculture and handicrafts, and idealized poverty. His ideas are well expressed in his major works, "Homilies" and "The Net of Faith." Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
