Gummy shark (star shark)

Japanese: ホシザメ(星鮫) - ホシザメ（英語表記）gummy shark

A marine fish of the family Lumpsharkidae in the order Carcharhiniformes. Its name comes from the white spots on its body. Its scientific name is based on the name it has in Nagasaki, Manouso (Manazo). In the Kansai region, it is called Hoshibuka. It is found over a wide area from Hokkaido to South Africa, and lives in relatively shallow areas up to 150 meters deep in coastal areas. It can grow to a maximum length of 1.5 meters. It is characterized by its flat, paving-stone-like teeth with small white spots scattered throughout. Mating season is from early summer to summer, birthing season is in spring, and the gestation period is 10 to 12 months.

メジロザメ目ドチザメ科の海産魚。名は体色に白点があることによる。学名は長崎での呼称のマノウソ(マナゾ)に基づく。関西ではホシブカという。北海道から南アフリカまでの広い範囲に分布し，沿岸域の水深150mくらいまでの比較的浅いところで生活する。最大全長1.5mになる。歯が平たく敷石状に並び，小白点が散在することが特徴。交尾期は初夏から夏にかけてで，分娩（ぶんべん）期は春，妊娠期間は10～12ヵ月である。
