A general term for plants that form archegonia on the gametophyte, in which eggs are fertilized to become new offspring (embryos). This is a taxonomic group established by H. G. Engler (1892). Depending on whether fertilization occurs through the pollen tube or directly by sperm without the pollen tube, they are divided into two groups: Embryophyta Siphonogamae (tubular embryo plants) and Embryophyta Zoidiogamae (asiphonogamae).
