Polarizer - Change

A purely optical device that extracts polarized light from unpolarized light. Depending on whether the extracted polarized light is linear, circular, or elliptical, it is called a linear polarizer, circular polarizer, or elliptical polarizer, respectively. The function of a polarizer is to split the incident light into two orthogonal polarized components, allow one to pass, and absorb or disperse the other. For this purpose, phenomena such as dichroism, birefringence, and reflection are utilized. A dichroic polarizer allows one polarized component to pass and absorbs the other. A birefringent polarizer reflects one component inside the polarizer and removes it, allowing only the other component to pass. There are two types of reflective polarizers: one that uses reflected light (polarization angle) from a single reflective surface, and one that uses reflected or transmitted light from multiple surfaces in a plate layer.

偏っていない光から偏光を取り出す純光学的な装置．取り出される偏光が直線であるか，円であるか，だ円であるかにより，それぞれ直線偏光子，円偏光子，だ円偏光子という．偏光子のはたらきは，入射光を直交する二つの偏光成分に分け，その一方を通過させ，他方を吸収または分散させることにある．そのため，二色性，複屈折，反射などの現象が利用される．二色性偏光子は，一つの偏光成分を通過させ，ほかの成分を吸収する．複屈折偏光子は，一方の成分を偏光子中で反射させて除き，他方の成分だけを通過させる．反射型偏光子には，一つの反射面からの(偏光角)反射光を利用するものと，板層にした多数の表面による反射光線あるいは透過光線を利用するものとがある．
