Simferopol - Симферополь/Simferopol'

The capital of Crimea Oblast in southern Ukraine. Population 344,000 (2001). Located on the dry plains at the northern foot of the Crimean Mountains. Direct trains depart from Moscow, and the city is also connected by air to major cities in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). It is the base for tourism in Crimea, and long-distance trolley buses run from the city to many resorts on the southern coast of Crimea. Light industries such as canned agricultural products, wine brewing, perfume and balm manufacturing, meat, dairy products, tobacco, and tricot products are thriving in the city, but there are also factories producing food industry equipment and television sets. There is also a university, two higher education institutions, three theaters, a local museum, and a picture gallery. The city has ancient origins, with the ancient Greek colony Neapolis existing in the 3rd century BC, and later the Tatar fortress Kermenchik built there. In addition, the Turkish fortress Ak Meşet was built in the 15th century, which became the city's direct ancestor, and it was incorporated as a city in 1784.
