Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (Kokudochiriin)

An affiliated organization of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism that carries out land surveying, map making, survey administration related to the implementation of the Survey Law, and other related projects. Since the Cadastral Map Section was established in the Ministry of Civil Affairs in 1869 to carry out the national project of basic surveying and basic map making, it expanded to the Home Ministry Geographical Bureau and the Ministry of Public Works Survey Section. After the Satsuma Rebellion, it was consolidated into the Army, and in 1981 the Army Survey Bureau was replaced by the Army Ministry General Staff Headquarters Land Survey Department in 1988. After World War II, it was re-launched as the Home Ministry Geographical Survey Institute in September 1945. With the establishment of the Ministry of Construction in July 1948, it became an affiliated organization of the Ministry of Construction, and in July 1960 it was renamed to its current name. It moved to Tsukuba Science City in March 1979. Activities related to land surveying and mapping include the establishment and maintenance of a control point network through basic surveys, crustal activity surveys that form the basis of earthquake prediction, the establishment and maintenance of medium-scale and large-scale national land base maps, remote sensing, the establishment of national atlases, geographical surveys including coastal sea area surveys, lake and marsh surveys, land use surveys, and land condition surveys, as well as the creation of various thematic maps, the establishment of digital national land information, and the core of research related to land surveying and mapping. Maps published by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, maps created by the Authority, and aerial photographs are sold by the Japan Map Center. 土地の測量，地図の作成，測量法の施行に伴う測量行政に関する事務，その他これらに付帯する事業を実施している国土交通省の付属機関。基本測量，基本図作成の国家事業を行うため，1869年民部省に地籍図掛がおかれて以来，内務省地理局，工部省測量掛と拡大し，西南戦争後，陸軍に総括されて，81年陸軍の測量局から 88年陸軍省参謀本部陸地測量部が設置された。第2次世界大戦後，1945年9月内務省地理調査所として再発足。 48年7月に建設省の設置に伴ってその付属機関となり，60年7月現在名に改称。 79年3月に筑波研究学園都市に移転した。土地の測量と地図の作成に関する事業内容としては，基本測量による基準点網の整備と維持管理，地震予知の基礎となる地殻活動調査，中縮尺基本図や大縮尺国土基本図の整備と維持管理，隔測 (リモートセンシング) ，国勢地図帳の整備，沿岸海域調査，湖沼調査，土地利用調査，土地条件調査などによる地理的調査事業と各種主題図の作成，国土数値情報の整備，土地の測量と地図に関する研究の中核，などがある。国土地理院発行地図および作成地図と空中写真は日本地図センターから発売されている。基準点成果の閲覧は国土地理院で行なっている。
