Pocket bell - Pocket bell (English spelling)

A small, portable wireless receiving terminal that fits in your pocket, and a telegram service that uses it. It is also called a wireless call service or paging service.

When a message that needs urgent notification to a pager carrier occurs, the pager's call number is dialed over the telephone network. This information is sent to a wireless base station, which emits a signal that makes the pager ring and displays the pager's number. The pager carrier can then find out the message by calling the displayed number on a public phone or other device. It was also possible to send a short message via e-mail when making a call.

In Japan, pager service began in Tokyo in July 1968 using the 150 MHz band, and was gradually expanded to all parts of the country. However, because the 150 MHz band was extremely congested, a new frequency band (250 MHz band) was used in August 1978, and a service was launched that aimed to make receivers more compact, extend continuous use time, and increase the number of subscribers that could be accommodated per frequency. As a result, the number of subscribers exceeded 10 million in 1997, but has decreased with the spread of mobile phones, and as of March 2001, the number of subscribers was 1.44 million.

In the 2000s, the original role of pagers, which was to call people on the move to inform them of urgent matters, was replaced by mobile phones, and the role of pagers began to focus on providing the latest information such as breaking news, weather forecasts, and stock price information. The ability to distribute data to a specified number of people became a distinctive feature of pagers, and as a result, NTT DoCoMo changed the name of pagers to "Quickcast" on January 1, 2001. The English spelling is Quickcast or QUICKCAST. Quickcast is a portmanteau of "quick" (fast) and "multicast" (distribution to a specified number of people). However, the number of subscribers continued to decline, and the company stopped accepting new applications in 2005, and ended the service at the end of March 2007.

At the end of September 2019 (Reiwa 1), Tokyo Telemessage, the only company that continued to provide pager services, discontinued its service, bringing to a close the nearly half-century history of pagers.

ポケットに入る小型の携帯用無線受信端末、およびそれを利用した電文サービス。無線呼出しサービスあるいはページングサービスともいう。

　ポケットベルの携帯者に対して急いで知らせたい用件が発生したとき、相手のポケットベルの呼出し番号を電話網を通じてダイヤルする。この情報は無線基地局に送られ、そこから発射される信号電波によって、携帯者のポケットベルが鳴り、呼出しを行った電話番号が表示され、携帯者は、公衆電話などで表示された連絡先に電話をすれば、用件の内容を知ることができるシステムであった。呼出しに電子メールを用いて短い電文を送ることもできた。

　日本におけるポケットベルサービスは、1968年（昭和43）7月から東京で150メガヘルツ帯を用いてサービスが開始され、その後逐次全国各地に拡大されていった。しかし、150メガヘルツ帯は周波数がきわめて込み合っているため、1978年8月から、新しい周波数帯（250メガヘルツ帯）を用いるとともに、受信機の小型化、連続使用時間の延長、一周波数当りの収容加入者数の増大を図ったサービスが開始された。その結果、1997年（平成9）には1000万を超える加入数であったが、携帯電話の普及に伴い減少し、2001年（平成13）3月時点では加入数144万となった。

　2000年代に入ると、移動中の人に急用を伝えるために呼び出すポケットベル本来の役割が、携帯電話にとってかわられたことから、ポケットベルの役割はニュース速報、天気予報、株価情報などの最新情報を伝えることに重点が置かれるようになってきた。特定多数へのデータ配信機能がポケットベルの特徴となり、これに伴いNTTドコモでは、2001年1月1日からポケットベルの名称を「クイックキャスト」に変更した。英語表記はQuickcast、またはQUICKCAST。クイックキャストは、速い（クイックquick）と特定多数への配信（マルチキャストmulticast）を組み合わせた造語である。しかし、その後も加入者数は減少を続け、2005年には新規受付をやめ、2007年3月末でサービス終了に至った。

　2019年（令和1）9月末、唯一ポケットベルサービスを続けていた東京テレメッセージが提供を終了し、ポケットベルの約半世紀の歴史に幕が下ろされた。
