Japanese ivy - Japanese ivy

An evergreen vine of the Apocynaceae family (APG classification: Apocynaceae). Aerial roots grow from the stems and climb up trees and rocks. The leaves are leathery, opposite each other, oblong or lanceolate, 3-6 cm long, and vary widely, being small in young plants. In May and June, the cymes produce white flowers about 2 cm in diameter, which later turn pale yellow. The corolla has five lobes, the lobes are spirally twisted, and the lower part forms a thin tube. The fruit is slender, 15-20 cm long, and hangs down. In October and November, the fruit ripens and splits open, and the slender seeds with long hairs at the tips are blown away by the wind. It is distributed from Honshu west of Akita Prefecture to Kyushu, the Ogasawara Islands, and the Korean Peninsula. It is said that in the past, something called Masakinokazura was actually Teikakazura, and that the vine that Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto made into a wig in front of the Heavenly Rock Cave was actually Teikakazura.

The genus Trachea includes about 16 species found in East Asia and North America.
