In the strictest sense, it is a small, long-tailed mouse that lives in the arid regions of North America. It is also called a pocket mouse. It has developed cheek pouches and can efficiently transport seeds to storage locations. Order Rodentia, Family Posadidae, Genus Perognathus A general term for mammals belonging to the Perognathus family, with 25 species including the desert pocket mouse P. penicillatus (illustration) found in the lowlands of the Midwest from Washington State to Mexico.
