In the strictest sense, it is a small, long-tailed mouse that lives in the arid regions of North America. It is also called a pocket mouse. It has developed cheek pouches and can efficiently transport seeds to storage locations. Order Rodentia, Family Posadidae, Genus Perognathus A general term for mammals belonging to the Perognathus family, with 25 species including the desert pocket mouse P. penicillatus (illustration) found in the lowlands of the Midwest from Washington State to Mexico. It is closely related to the kangaroo rat, but does not move by hopping on its hind two legs, instead walking on all fours.

狭義には北アメリカの乾燥地帯にすむ尾の長い小さなネズミ。ポケットマウスともいう。発達したほお袋をもち種子を貯蔵場所に能率よく運搬することができる。齧歯（げつし）目ポケットネズミ科ポケットネズミ属(ポケットマウス属)Perognathusに属する哺乳類の総称で，ワシントン州からメキシコに至る中西部の低地にサバクポケットネズミP.penicillatus（イラスト）など25種が分布する。カンガルーネズミに近縁だが，後2足での跳躍による移行はせず，4足歩行をする。
