kinematics

...statics is a term used to distinguish between situations in which no motion or change occurs, i.e., when the equilibrium relationship between multiple forces is discussed, and dynamics is a term used in other cases. Kinematics is also used when the subject is limited to describing the state of motion and does not involve forces as the cause of motion (and its changes). In English, mechanics began to be used in this sense in the 17th century, while dynamics was used much later (in the 19th century).
