Cafe Printemps - Cafe Printemps

…The word “cafe” originally meant “coffee,” but it eventually came to mean “a shop that serves coffee.” It seems that such shops had already existed in Mecca, Arabia, in the 15th century, but they spread to Europe through Egypt and Turkey, and through Venice. In France, they first appeared in Marseille, a trading port with the Middle East, in the mid-17th century. In 1672, a simple street café appeared in Paris, but in 1686, a Sicilian named Procope opened a full-scale shop on what is now the Rue de la Comédie, which marked the beginning of the rise of cafés. …

From [Coffee]

... Coffee began to be drunk in Japan after the Meiji period. At first, it was only enjoyed by a very limited number of people, but in 1888, the first coffee shop, Katsuhi Sakan, opened in Kuromon-cho, Ueno, Tokyo, and started serving coffee. In 1911, Café Printemps and Café Paulista opened in the Ginza district of Tokyo, and coffee gradually became more popular among the general public, with the latter in particular promoting Brazilian coffee.
[Instant coffee]
Before World War II, enjoying coffee at home was extremely rare in Japan, but now it has become quite commonplace.
