Tales of the Hōgen Era

Japanese: 保元物語 - ほうげんものがたり

A military tale from the early Kamakura period. It is also called "Hogenki" or "Hogen Kassenki." The author and year of its creation are unknown. It consists of three volumes. It is called "Heiji Monogatari" and is said to have been written by the same author, but it is thought to be a separate work. Like "Heiji Monogatari," there are many different texts with large differences. It is a story about the Hogen Rebellion, and it is said that it started out as a collection of anecdotes related to the rebellion, but was developed into a coherent story rich in lyricism by biwa hoshi and others. The heroism of Minamoto no Tametomo is particularly impressive, and it influenced later literature such as Takizawa Bakin's "Chinsetsu Yumiharizuki" from the late Edo period.

鎌倉時代前期の軍記物語。『保元記』『保元合戦記』ともいう。作者，成立年未詳。3巻。『平治物語』と並称され，同じ作者の手に成るともいわれるが，別に成立した作品と思われる。『平治物語』と同じく異同の大きい種々のテキストがある。保元の乱を扱った物語で，初めは保元の乱にまつわる逸話を集成したような形態であったものが，琵琶法師などの手によって語り物として抒情性の豊かな一貫した物語に成長したといわれる。なかでも，源為朝の英雄ぶりが印象的で，江戸時代後期の滝沢馬琴の『椿説弓張月 (ちんせつゆみはりづき) 』など後代の文学に影響を与えた。
