〘Noun〙 A perennial plant of the Convolvulaceae family. Native to tropical Asia, it is widely cultivated as a vegetable in the tropics, but is rarely cultivated in Japan. The leaves are oblong with pointed tips, resembling sweet potatoes. In autumn, it blooms white or red morning glory-shaped flowers about 5 cm in diameter. The young shoots and leaves are eaten as everyday vegetables. 〘名〙 ヒルガオ科の多年草。アジア熱帯地方の原産で、野菜として熱帯圏で広く栽培され、日本での栽培はまれ。葉は長楕円形で先がとがり、サツマイモに似る。秋、径五センチメートルほどの白または紅色のアサガオ形の花を開く。若芽、葉を日常の野菜として食す。
