During the Edo period, this was an institution established by the shogunate in Hakodate (present-day Hakodate City) to handle products from Ezo. It is also known as the Hakodate Product Exchange. In 1799, the shogunate established exchanges in Hakodate and Edo as trading institutions when eastern Ezo and the area around Hakodate came under direct control. It was abolished in 1812 when the place contract system was reinstated, but in 1857, the Product Exchange was re-established in Hakodate with the main purpose of controlling the distribution of Ezo products, and exchanges and merchants were established in Edo, Osaka, and other areas, and a commission of 2% of the transaction amount was charged. At the same time, producers were given the "motoshiire method" of purchasing products. It was renamed the Hakodate Production Exchange in 1868, and the Hokkaido Product Exchange in 1869, and belonged to the Hokkaido Development Commission in 1870.
