From the city

… [Seiko Fujii]
[Islamic Society]
In the Islamic world, markets are commonly called bāzār. This word is Persian, and in Japan it is commonly called bazaar, and corresponds to the Arabic word sūq. Bazaar and souk refer to both periodic markets and markets with rows of permanent shops, but historically periodic markets were known earlier.

From [Housing]

...In what follows, we will consider the courtyard houses of the Maghreb as a typical example, while also introducing other distinctive examples.
[Courtyard-style houses in the Maghreb]
The old city (medina) of the Maghreb region is surrounded by a wall, and has a market called a souk on the side of the wall. The souk is located at the lowest point within the wall, and the roads that at first glance appear maze-like converge here.
