Queens

Japanese: クイーンズ(英語表記)Queens
Queens
One of the five boroughs (boroughs) of New York City, United States. It is part of the county of the same name. It is located in the western part of Long Island, stretching across the island from the junction of the East River and Long Island Sound to the Atlantic Ocean. In early colonial times, it was part of New Netherland. The towns were gradually consolidated, and in 1664 it came under British rule. In the 19th century, it developed into a small commercial center for the surrounding rural areas, and some of the fishing villages became famous as summer resorts. It became a borough of New York City in 1898. It developed rapidly after the opening of the Queensborough Bridge in 1909 and the Long Island Railroad tunnel the following year. Today, most of the area is residential, but it has a wide variety of factories, warehouses, and is also a transportation base. It is home to John F. Kennedy International Airport. Area: 328 km2 . Population: 1,951,598 (1990).
