A former town in Aira County, located in a small basin in the upper reaches of the Sendai River in northeastern Kagoshima Prefecture. The main settlement is at the junction of the Hisatsu Line and the Kitto Line, and developed as a railway town. Rice farming is thriving in the surrounding rural areas, and vegetables and tea are cultivated, as well as livestock such as beef cattle. 鹿児島県北東部,川内(せんだい)川上流の小盆地を占める姶良(あいら)郡の旧町。主集落は肥薩(ひさつ)線と吉都(きっと)線の分岐点に当たり,鉄道町として発達。周辺農村部では米作が盛んで,野菜,茶の栽培,肉牛などの畜産も行う。2005年3月姶良郡栗野町と合併し町制,湧水町となる。54.48km2。4469人(2003)。
