(1) Ningyo-joruri. Historical piece. 3 volumes. A collaboration between Bunkodo and Miyoshi Shoraku. First performed at the Osaka Takemotoza in May 1736 (Genbun 1). A joruri version of the kabuki kyogen play "Hinin no katakiuchi" (Vengeance of a wicked man's enemy), which was started by the first Araki Yojibei in the Kanbun period (1661-73) and continued by the first Anegawa Shinshiro in the Kyoho period (1716-36). The story depicts the events that unfold when the brothers Harutō Jiroemon and Shinshichi, who live in the Bingo domain, become wicked and set out to kill their father's enemy, and finally achieve their goal in Yamato Koriyama. The "Daian-ji Embankment Section" (Lower Volume) is famous for its many dramatic scenes, in which Jiroemon, injured by the cold and unable to stand, demonstrates his mettle by showing people the famous sword Aoe Shimosaka that had been passed down through generations of his father, and is attacked while sleeping and nearly fights back.
