This refers to the evangelical ideology that the Spanish theologian Juan de Valdés (c. 1500-41) spread mainly among the upper aristocratic circles of the city of Naples from about 1530 onwards, and characterises the first period of the Italian Reformation. While it was close to the ideas of Luther and Servetus, it remained within the framework of the internal Catholic reform in that it was based on Erasmus-like principles and preached indifference to church form and doctrine, an escape into the inner life, and a return to the practice of the gospel and the apostolic life and faith.
