Topknot - Hokei

Japanese: 宝髻 - ほうけい
Topknot - Hokei

A type of hair ornament from the Nara period. It is mentioned in the section on formal attire for imperial princesses in the Taiho Code's Clothing Code, and the Ryo no Gige states that it is called a Takamage because the hair cord is decorated with gold jewels. In other words, it is the equivalent of men's formal attire. Openwork metal fittings studded with jewels and featuring dragons, phoenixes, and kirins are decorated on top of the topknot. In the Heian period, a knot-like topknot was made on top of hanging hair and was also called a Takamage.
