[Born] 239 B.C. Calabria, Ludiae [Died] 169 B.C. Roman poet and father of Latin literature. Grew up in the Greek cultural area of southern Italy, spoke Greek, Latin, and Oscan, and served as a centurion in the Roman army. Under the protection of Cato the Elder, he went to the capital and became a Greek teacher, began writing poetry, and gained the friendship of many influential people, including Scipio the Elder, and obtained Roman citizenship in 184 BC. His representative works include the first Roman Homeric heroic epic poem, Annales (18 volumes, completed around 169 BC), which sang of Roman history from the legendary period to his own time, and about 20 adaptations of Greek tragedies. He was a prolific writer, and also wrote praetexta plays, comedies, satras (miscellaneous poems), and epigrams, all based on episodes from Roman history. Only a few fragments remain today.
