Finnish Turkic linguist. Professor of Turkish at the University of Helsinki from 1944 to 1961. He engaged in research on Chuvash and Tatar languages, and published papers such as "Chuvash loanwords in Cheremis" (1920) and "Tatar loanwords in Cheremis" (1923). His main works were "Data on the phonetic history of Turkic languages" (1949) and "Data on Turkic morphology" (1957), which made him a world authority on Turkic linguistics. Both books were a sound compilation of phonetic and morphological data on Turkic languages, and are used as the most reliable comparative grammar overviews of Turkic languages.

フィンランドのチュルク諸語学者。1944年から61年までヘルシンキ大学のトルコ語学教授。チュバシ語やタタール語の研究に従事し，《チェレミス語におけるチュバシ語の借用語》(1920)や《チェレミス語におけるタタール語の借用語》(1923)などの論文を発表した。主著は《チュルク語音声史資料》(1949)と《チュルク語形態論資料》(1957)で，これらによりチュルク語学の世界的権威とみなされるに至った。両書はチュルク諸語の音声と形態の資料を堅実な方法で整理してまとめたもので，最も信頼のおけるチュルク諸語の比較文法概説書として利用されている。
