Cuban Women's Union

...The status of women has improved to a degree incomparable to that before the revolution, and women have made remarkable advances in various areas of society. For most Cubans, the mass organizations, the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR) and the Union of Cuban Women (FMC, both founded in 1960), are at the center of daily social activities, and these organizations are indispensable for the functioning of Cuban socialism at the popular level. Cultural activities are also permitted freely as long as their content does not go against the revolution, and within this framework, literature, music, theater, dance, publishing, and other fields are actively carried out.
