A river that flows south through eastern Hokkaido and merges with the Tokachi River. It is the first tributary of the Tokachi River. It originates in the Ishikari Mountains near the border between Rikubetsu Town under the jurisdiction of the Tokachi General Bureau and Oketo Town under the jurisdiction of the Okhotsk General Bureau, merges with the Rikubetsu River, Kunnebetsu River, and others, and empties into the Tokachi River in Ikeda Town under the jurisdiction of the Tokachi General Bureau. Terraces have developed in the river valley, and field crops and dairy farming are carried out. In addition, the Shiribeshi Tobetsu River, which flows west through the Oshima Peninsula in southern Hokkaido, is also often called the Tobetsu River.
