[Ancient and Middle Ages]
In ancient times, they were formed by political powers in each region mainly for military and political purposes such as transmitting information, transporting soldiers and their food, and transferring tributes, and with the formation of the Ritsuryo state, they were unified and systematized around the capitals and provincial capitals. Under the ancient Ritsuryo system, the Tokaido, Tosando, Hokuriku, San'in, San'yo, Nankai, and Saikaido were developed as highways connecting the capitals and various provinces, and of these, the San'yo road, which connected the capitals and Dazaifu, was given the most importance and was designated as the main road, the Tokaido and Tosando were designated as middle roads, and the others as minor roads.

From [Waki-kaido]

For example, the Chugoku-ji (Sanyo-do) was an extension of the Tokaido, and it ran from Osaka to Shimonoseki, passing through Okayama and Hiroshima, and then on to Ozato or Kokura in Buzen. It was a route used by shogunate officials and feudal lords on alternate attendance trips, as well as by ordinary people for personal business and to visit shrines and temples. The Ise-ji branched off from Yokkaichi on the Tokaido, passing through seven inns from Kobe to Yamada before reaching Ise Jingu, and the Iga-goe Dochu was a route from Seki on the Tokaido to Nara. The Sado-ji was a route from Edo to Sado, and included three routes: the Aizu-dori route, which runs from Shirakawa on the Oshu-do to Teradomari in Echigo, the Mikuni-kaido route, which branches off from Takasaki on the Nakasendo, crosses the Mikuni Pass, and reaches Izumozaki in Echigo, and the Hokkoku-kaido route, which branches off from Oiwake-shuku on the Nakasendo and goes to Izumozaki.
