A deciduous tall tree of the legume family, also known as kaenju (flame tree). Native to Madagascar, it is used as a roadside tree in tropical regions. The tree is large and umbrella-shaped, with bipinnate compound leaves that resemble those of the mimosa, but can reach a length of 60 cm. The terminal racemes produce fiery scarlet flowers that bloom all year round in the tropics. The flowers are not butterfly-shaped, but flat with five petals and prominent long stamens. The bean pods that grow after the flowers reach a length of more than 30 cm. In Japan, it is sometimes cultivated in greenhouses for decorative purposes. It is often called by its old scientific name, Poinciana. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
