The tendency towards decorativeness intensified in the early modern period, and in the Edo period, lions and elephants were carved out of separate pieces of wood into the wooden nose of the head beam (kashinuki), and dragons were carved into what were originally structural materials such as the tail rafters and tsunagi bridges.
