Royal Hawk-Eyes (Phoenix Sparrow) - Royal Hawk-Eyes (English spelling) Paradise Whydah
A passerine bird of the family Weaverbird. It is about 15 cm long, and about 40 cm long including the male's reproductive tail feathers. Sexes are heterochromatic. The male's reproductive feathers are black on the head and back, yellowish brown from the neck to the chest, and whitish on the belly. The four central tail feathers are long and wide, two of which are elongated and two are even wider, with elongated shafts at the tips. The male's non-reproductive feathers and the female's are light yellow-brown with scattered dark vertical stripes and small spots. It is found in eastern and southern Africa, inhabiting the savannas.

スズメ目ハタオリドリ科の鳥。全長約15cm,生殖羽の雄の尾羽を含めた全長は約40cm。雌雄異色。雄の生殖羽は頭部と背以下の背面が黒く,後頸(こうけい)から胸にかけて黄色がかった褐色で,腹は白っぽい。中央の4枚の尾羽は長くのび,幅広くなり,とくに2枚は伸長し,2枚はもっと幅広くなり,先端は羽軸が伸長している。雄の非生殖羽と雌には淡黄褐色に暗色の縦斑や小斑が散在している。アフリカ東部から南部にかけて分布し,サバンナに生息する。
