Narumi

Japanese: 鳴海 - なるみ
Narumi

A district in Midori Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. Former Narumi Town. Former post station on the Tokaido road. During the Kanbun era (1661-1673), there were 533 households, one main inn, two side inns, and 60 horses. It is close to the scenic Narumi Lagoon, where Matsuo Basho wrote "The chidori cry out, looking into the darkness of Hoshizaki," and a stone monument bearing the poem "Chidorizuka" has been erected. Narumi Lagoon stretches from the western end of the post town to Kasadera, and continues to Ayuchi Lagoon, which appears in the Manyoshu. Futamurayama, located on a hill, is on the route of the Kamakura Kaido road, slightly north of the Tokaido road. The Shikinaisha (listed in the Shikinaisha) Narumi Shrine enshrines Yamato Takeru no Mikoto and Miyazuhime as its deities. Since the Keicho era (1596-1615), the area has been known for its specialty, the "Arimatsu-Narumi Shibori" dyed fabric. There is a Narumi station on the Nagoya Railroad Main Line here.
