A process that makes textile products less susceptible to stains and dirt, or makes soiled items easier to remove by washing. Stain-resistant methods vary depending on the type of fiber, the type of dirt, and whether the emphasis is on preventing adhesion or removing the dirt. Treatment with water-repellent finishes such as wax or silicone makes it harder for hydrophilic dirt to adhere, while treatment with organic fluorine-based oil-repellent finishes such as Scotchgard makes it harder for hydrophilic and oily dirt to adhere. Hydrophobic synthetic fibers are prone to static electricity and dry dirt, so antistatic finishes that make the fiber surface hydrophilic are effective in preventing dirt.
