A legendary king of ancient Babylonia. When Etana complained to the sun god Shamash about having no heir, he was advised by an eagle in the mountains to give birth to a plant. Etana went to the eagle, rode it to the sky of Anu, and then to Ishtar, but in trying to get the miraculous plant, he got too high and became dizzy and fell to the ground. Since then, he stayed with the god Gira in hell. This story appears in manuscripts dating back to around 2000 BCE, and Etana's name appears in the King List as the fourth king of the First Dynasty of Kish.
