Japanese: 疑問仮名遣い - ぎもんかなづかい

There are many ways to write kana, and the basis for determining which one is correct is unclear. Even in phonetic kana, interpretations of the prescribed provisions vary from person to person, leading to inconsistent application. For example, in the case of modern kana usage, "motozuku" and "motozuku" can be considered a kind of questionable kana usage. In the historical kana usage of the Keichi school, doubts arise about words that cannot be found in documents before the 10th century, which is the standard. The first part of the National Language Research Committee's "Questionable Kana Usage" (1912) collects the theories of various scholars, and the second part (1915) gives examples of each word in documents from each period from the Heian to the Muromachi period, provides supporting evidence, discusses the etymology, and presents the editor's (Motoori Seizo) opinion. This theory should be considered valid as a historicist theory.

仮名遣いに幾とおりもの書き方があり，そのどれを正しいとするか，根拠の明らかでない語のかなづかいをいう。表音主義のかなづかいでも，規定条文の解釈が人によって違い，適用が区々になることがある。たとえば〈現代かなづかい〉の場合の〈もとづく〉と〈もとずく〉，これも一種の疑問仮名遣いといえよう。契沖流の歴史的仮名遣いでは，その標準とする10世紀以前の文献に証例を求めえない語について，疑問が生ずる。国語調査委員会の《疑問仮名遣》は，前編(1912)は諸学者の説を収集，後編(1915)は語ごとに平安から室町まで各時代の文献での実例をあげ，傍証をとり，語源を論じて編者(本居清造)の見解を示したもので，歴史主義として妥当とすべき説である。
