Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari
1876‐1948
Italian opera composer. From 1903 to 1909, he was director of the Marcello Music School in Venice, and from 1939 he served as professor of composition at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. He distinguished himself as an opera composer with the opera buffa Les le lecteurs (1903), and later moved in the direction of verismo, which further pared down the idiomatic techniques of comic opera, and wrote works such as The Jewel of the Madonna (1911).
