A city in southern Gifu Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1940. It occupies hilly land in the middle reaches of the Toki River and has long been a pottery producing area. Since the Chuo Main Line was opened at the end of the Meiji period, it has developed as a ceramics city. The city branches off from the Taita Line and is served by the Chuo Expressway. The city is a thriving manufacturer of tableware, tiles, and other products, accounting for approximately 70% of the city's manufactured goods shipments (2003). It is also a distribution center for ceramics manufactured in the surrounding areas. It is home to the Ceramic Testing Laboratory, the Mino Ancient Pottery Exhibition Hall, and Eihoji Temple. 岐阜県南部の市。1940年市制。土岐川中流部の丘陵地を占め,古くから陶器の産地で,明治末に中央本線が開通してから窯業都市として発展。太多(たいた)線を分岐し,中央自動車道が通じる。食器,タイルなどの製造が盛んで,市の製造品出荷額の約7割(2003)を占め,周辺地区で製造される陶磁器の集散地でもある。陶磁器試験場,美濃古陶器陳列館,永保寺がある。2006年1月土岐郡笠原町を編入。91.25km2。11万2595人(2010)。
