This music-focused festival is held every August in Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart. Its history dates back to 1877, but it became an annual event after the Vienna Festival Theatre Association was founded in 1920. After 1921, orchestral music and chamber music concerts of Mozart's works were added, and opera performances were added the following year. In the 1930s, great conductors such as Walter, Toscanini, E. Kleiber, and Klemperer appeared. During World War II, the festival was scaled down or canceled, but after the war, it became even more lively due to an expansion of the repertoire, the appearance of world-class orchestras, and the completion of the Great Festival Theatre (1960). The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is the center of orchestral and opera performances, and a variety of other events such as solo performances and chamber music concerts are also held.
