This mountain lies on the border between the villages of Mizukami in Kumamoto Prefecture and Shiiba and Nishimera in Miyazaki Prefecture. It is 1,721 meters above sea level and is the highest peak in the Kyushu Mountains, made of granite. It is the source of the Hitotsusegawa and Kumagawa rivers. On the Miyazaki Prefecture side, the slope is gentle near the summit, but becomes steep from the middle to the foot of the mountain facing the Hitotsusegawa valley. On the Kumamoto Prefecture side, the slope is steep from the middle to the upper part. The summit offers excellent views, with views of Mt. Ishido in the east, the Yuyama Basin and Ichifusa Dam in the west, and the Hitoyoshi Basin and Mt. Kirishima in the distance. There is also a colony of Akebono Azalea on the summit, which, together with the exposed granite, make up part of the landscape. The main entrance is Yuyama in Minakami Village, and Ichifusa Shrine, known for its pilgrimage to Mt. Otake, is located halfway up the mountain. The trailhead on the Miyazaki side is Makinokuchi in Nishimera Village. It is part of the Kyushu Chuo Mountains Quasi-National Park.
