This reduction reaction converts the carbonyl group of a ketone or aldehyde into a methylene group, CH2 . It was discovered almost simultaneously by two chemists, N. Kishner in 1911 and L. Wolff in 1912. A carbonyl compound is first converted into a hydrazone (formula (1)), which is then heated in the presence of an alkali to obtain the reduced product (formula (2)). Generally, the hydrazone is isolated from the reaction of formula (1) and then the reaction of formula (2) is carried out, but recently, a method in which the hydrazone is reduced with an alkali without being isolated is used.
