Weitzman
Zionist activist and chemist. Also known as Weizmann or Beizman. Born in Russia. Studied chemistry in Berlin and Freiburg, traveled to England and taught chemistry at the University of Manchester, where he also devised a method for mass-producing acetone. During World War I, he sympathized with Herzl and led the Zionist movement. He successfully lobbied high-ranking British officials to obtain the Balfour Declaration, establishing the foundation for the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine. He was the first president of the State of Israel (1949-1952).
