A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family, also called Kumanogiku. It is widely distributed from the subtropics to the warm temperate coasts of Asia. It grows in slightly damp places on the Izu Peninsula and the coasts of western Japan. The stems spread along the ground and take root at the nodes, and are hairy all over. The leaves are opposite, lanceolate, 3-7 cm long, and have a rough surface. From early summer to autumn, it produces single flower heads about 2 cm in diameter at the end of long stalks. The center is a tubular flower, and about 10 yellow ray florets are arranged radially at the edge. The pappus of the achene is extremely short and dish-shaped. Note that another species of the same genus, W. prostrata , is also sometimes called Hamaguruma. This species grows in sandy areas on the coast, and has thick, leathery, small leaves 2-4 cm long with a very rough surface.
