…In 1363, she married Haakon VI of Norway, and in 1375 succeeded in making her only son Olav the king of Denmark. In 1380, she inherited control of Norway. Olav died young in 1387, but Margrethe captured Albrecht of Sweden in 1389, and became the de facto ruler of the three Nordic countries of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. She adopted her son, Erik VII of Pomerania, and made him the monarch of the three Nordic countries when the Kalmar Union was established in 1397. She provided generous protection for churches and monasteries within the country. …
