...Artists representing the International Gothic style, which combined graceful decorativeness and realism, emerged in the late 14th century, but the Dutch sculptor C. Sluter served the Duke of Burgundy at the end of the 14th century and produced sculptures that surpassed this trendy style with their powerful forms and overflowing vitality. He became head of the city's workshop in 1389 and produced sculptures such as the doorway to the Carthusian monastery built by Philip II in Champmol on the outskirts as a mausoleum for successive monarchs, and the Well of Moses (1405) in the courtyard. Sluter's sarcophagus sculpture of a line of mourners is currently kept in the Municipal Museum. ...
