A port city on the Java Sea in the northern part of Java Timur Province, eastern Java, Indonesia. It is located about 85 km west-northwest of Surabaya, connected by a major national highway. It is the commercial center of the rice and corn growing region. It was once a base for opium smuggling. Population 65,981 (1980).
